How to Calculate Pesticide Dilution Rate

Getting a mix wrong costs money two ways: too weak and the application doesn't work, too strong and you've burned product (or worse, violated the label). Every pesticide label specifies its rate a little differently, so learning how to calculate pesticide dilution rate really means knowing three different calculations, not one formula memorized. Here's all three, with the math shown.

Before any of this: the product label is the legal rate. Nothing below overrides it — these are the calculations for applying whatever rate the label already specifies.

Method 1: Volume Rate (oz per gallon)

This is the most common format on ready-to-use and hose-end labels — the label gives you an amount of product per gallon of water.

Formula:

Product needed (oz) = Label rate (oz/gal) × Total spray volume (gal)

Worked example: Label calls for 2 oz per gallon. You're filling a 4-gallon backpack sprayer.

2 oz/gal × 4 gal = 8 oz of product

Top off the rest of the tank with water to reach 4 gallons total, not 4 gallons of water plus the product.

Method 2: Area Rate (oz per 1,000 sq ft)

Turf, perimeter, and some granular-to-liquid labels give the rate per unit of area instead of per gallon, because the coverage matters more than the tank size.

Formula:

Product needed (oz) = (Treatment area (sq ft) ÷ 1,000) × Label rate (oz/1,000 sq ft)

Worked example: Label calls for 1.5 oz per 1,000 sq ft. The property is 6,500 sq ft.

(6,500 ÷ 1,000) × 1.5 oz = 9.75 oz of product

This tells you how much product to put in the tank — it doesn't tell you how much water to use. That's set separately by your sprayer's calibrated output (gallons per 1,000 sq ft), which is a function of your equipment, not the label rate.

Method 3: % Concentration with Active Ingredient Adjustment

This is the one that trips up techs who learned method 1 first, because it isn't "% of the tank" — it's % of active ingredient in the tank, and the product itself usually isn't 100% AI.

Formula:

Product needed (oz) = (Target % AI in tank × Total tank volume (oz)) ÷ Product's % AI concentration

Worked example: You need a 0.5% AI solution in a 128 oz (1-gallon) tank. Your concentrate is labeled 25% AI.

(0.005 × 128 oz) ÷ 0.25 = 2.56 oz of product

Notice the two numbers that matter here — your target concentration and the product's own concentration — are almost never the same number, and mixing up which one goes on which side of the equation is the single most common dilution error techs report.

Does the dilution rate change with tank size?

No — the rate stays fixed to the label. What changes is the total product amount, which scales with your tank's total volume.

What if the label gives a range (e.g., "1–2 oz/gal")?

Use your judgment within the labeled range based on pest pressure — but never mix outside the labeled range in either direction.

Is this the same as REI or PHI?

No. Dilution rate is how much product goes in the tank. Re-entry interval (REI) is how long people must stay out of the treated area afterward — a separate label field entirely. See REI Explained for the details.
